If you're leveling to 80, don't worry about your build too much. You can change it later on any time at no cost. The exotic gear is easy to get at 80 as well. Ascended is the top end gear, but you don't need that right off the bat and can work towards that if you want to do fractals/raids. GW2 is an MMO and the big four MMOs are WoW, FF14, GW2, and ESO. WoW and FF14 are the older tab-targetting style, whereas ESO has action combat like GW2. Be warned though that it's nowhere near as smooth as GW2's and I personally hate it. The classes also don't feel anywhere near as distinct. Either way, whenever someone is looking for an MMO Get everything you need to experience Tyria, a vast living world. Just to confirm, I've got 2 accounts, EU and NA, and recently joined a levelling challenge where rules were to play on an f2p account (free). I've leveled in minimal fashion to 80 and while it has some restrictions, you get access to the core game for free and a great feeling for the core professions, mechanics, so you should be able to determine whether it is to your liking just fine.
